ABSTRACT

Stress among parents has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research prior to the pandemic indicates that parents of children who struggle with emotion regulation (ER) and who themselves are less mindful report more stress and diminished coping abilities. We know little, however, about these associations in the context of COVID-19. To prevent COVID-related deteriorations in parent well-being and child outcomes and to support parents during this potentially challenging time, it is important to understand the factors that are associated with increased stress as well as adaptive coping. This paper discusses the association between children's ER, mindful parenting (MP), parent stress, and parents' coping with parenting during the pandemic in a sample of 217 caregivers of school-aged children (91.0% mothers). Results indicated that children's ER was associated with parents' self-reported coping with parenting in the pandemic but was not associated with increased stress. Further, MP moderated the association between children's ER and coping, such that parents who were the most mindful and had children with better ER skills reported significantly greater ability to cope with pandemic parenting. Coping was lower for other combinations of ER and mindful parenting. These findings contradict those from before COVID, suggesting the relationship between children's ER and parent outcomes may differ in the COVID-19 context, and offering insights into which parents may be most likely to struggle with coping with pandemic parenting. ABSTRACT

Psychological adaptation in isolated, confined, and extreme environments plays an important role in the achievement of performance and wellbeing. Whereas empirical research has been fruitful in determining the antecedents of psychological adaptation, opportunities remain to identify and apply new constructs through which psychological adaptation can grow. In the current study, we explored the possibility that one such construct is individual self-leadership. Participants were eight Antarctic scientists enrolled in the 2021–2022 summer campaign in the South Shetland Islands, under considerable COVID-19 restrictions during that period. Data were collected on three occasions and analysed through a mixed-method approach where qualitative and quantitative evidence were integrated. Overall, the results indicated that the self-imposed quarantine pre-deployment period in Punta Arenas had a heavy toll on expeditioners mental health, with the psychological adaptation and self-leadership of expeditioners being positively correlated across the campaign. The implications of our findings, as well possible future research directions, are discussed. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

The article is devoted to the research of social intelligence as a factor of socio-psychological adaptation of university students with special educational needs during distance learning. Study methods of social intelligence and socio-psychological adaptation are used. The respondents' contingent of consisted of 78 students with special educational needs. The average level of social intelligence was empirically established in part students, which testifies to their ability to understand properly and the ability to behavior in almost half of life situations. Almost a quarter of students have a higher than average level of social intelligence and the same part is lower than average, which confirms their ability to understand and predict other people's behavior in almost three quarters and one quarter of life situations, respectively. Students do not have high and low levels of social intelligence. Most students (almost two-thirds) have an average level of adaptability and mal-adaptability;instead, a minority (almost one third) is at a high level. Adaptability and mal-adaptability, respectively, indicate consistency and inconsistency between the needs of the individual and the requirements of the social environment. Students with a low level of adaptability and mal-adaptability were not found. The defined statistically significant relationship of social intelligence with adaptability (direct) and maladaptive (reverse) shows the influence of social intelligence on the effectiveness of socio-psychological adaptation of students. The results of the research proved that social intelligence is a factor of socio-psychological adaptation of students with special educational needs during distance learning.

ABSTRACT

This mixed study evaluated changes and stability in health indicators (depression, anxiety, stress, alcohol consumption and amount of hours of sleep) and the belief in academic self-efficacy of Brazilian university students, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first step, quantitative and longitudinal, investigated 20 students (average age=20.8;SD=3.4) in the period of 2019 and 2020, suggesting the maintenance of mental health indicators and the reduction of alcohol consumption and self-efficacy. In the second, qualitative stage, interviews during the quarantine revealed processes of personal and academic adaptation, in addition to concerns about mental health in the face of the pandemic. Institutional responses by universities to these ongoing challenges are recommended, as opposed to an individual analytical perspective.Copyright © 2023 Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru. ABSTRACT

It is important to know the community coping strategies during the rapid uprise of a pandemic, as this helps to predict the consequences, especially in the mental health spectrum. This study aims to explore coping strategies used by Bangladeshi citizens during the major wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Prospective, cross-sectional survey of adults living in Bangladesh. Methods: Participants were interviewed for socio-demographic data and completed the Bengali-translated Brief-COPE Inventory. COPING indicators were categorized in four ways, such as approach, avoidant, humor, and religion. Results: Participants (N = 2001), aged 18 to 86 years, were recruited from eight administrative divisions within Bangladesh (mean age 31.85 ± 14.2 years). The male-to-female participant ratio was 53.4% (n = 1074) to 46.6% (n = 927). Higher scores were reported for approach coping styles (29.83 ± 8.9), with lower scores reported for avoidant coping styles (20.83 ± 6.05). Humor coping scores were reported at 2.68 ± 1.3, and religion coping scores at 5.64 ± 1.8. Both men and women showed similar coping styles. Multivariate analysis found a significant relationship between male gender and both humor and avoidant coping (p < 0.01). Male gender was found to be inversely related to both religion and approach coping (p < 0.01). Marital status and education were significantly related to all coping style domains (p < 0.01). The occupation was related to approach coping (p < 0.01). Rural and urban locations differed in participants' coping styles (p < 0.01). Exploratory factor analysis revealed two cluster groups (factors 1 and 2) of mixed styles of coping. Conclusions: Participants in this study coped with the COVID-19 pandemic by utilizing mixed coping strategies. This study finds female gender, the married, elderly, and rural populations were adaptive to positive approaches to coping, whereas the male and educated population had the avoidant approach to coping. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the relationship between sense of coherence and sociodemographic data, remote physical work environment, and self-perception of symptoms, vocal handicap and vocal fatigue in teachers. METHODS: Seventy eight teachers pertaining to the municipal education network of a Brazilian capital city participated in the study, during the period of social isolation by COVID-19. An online questionnaire was applied with sociodemographic and physical remote work environment questions, the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-13), the Brazilian Dysphonia Screening Tool (Br-DST), the Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI), and the Vocal Handicap Index (VHI-10). Descriptive analysis, bivariate and multivariate Logistic regression models were performed to check the proportion of teachers with high and low SOC among the different categories of independent variables. Student's t test and Mann Whitney test were used to compare SOC, IDV, and VFI scores between the groups, and Hedge's g test was used to access the effect size. The total scores of SOC, VHI and VFI were correlated using Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. All tests adopted a 5% significance level. RESULTS: Male teachers and those over 45 years old were, respectively, 6.79 (95%CI = 1.16-39.58) and 5.27 (95%CI = 1.40-19.76) times more likely to present a high SOC. The variables associated with a lower chance of presenting high SOC were vocal restriction (OR = 0.21; 95%CI = 0.06-0.79) and voice-related physical discomfort (OR = 0.13; 95%CI = 0.02-0.78). Regarding the remote work environment, in bivariate analysis, teachers who were dissatisfied with air quality (OR = 0.08; 95%CI = 0.01-0.65), temperature (OR = 0.11; 95%CI = 0.01-0.92), and noise (OR = 0.25; 95%CI = 0.61-0.99) were less likely to have high SOC. Higher values of SOC are associated with lower self-perception of vocal fatigue and voice handicap (P < 0,001). CONCLUSION: The way individuals face stressful situations interferes with the self-perception of their voice and their work environment. The relationship between the sense of coherence and voice perception is relevant to favor programs to promote vocal health and stress management in teachers.

ABSTRACT

Burnout syndrome is lately more and more often encountered in national and even international scientific papers on different professional categories and hierarchical levels. In this research is targeted the medical staff of Medical-Social Care Unit, nurses, medical assistants and even doctors. Unit founded in 2007 that keeps the same staff since then, forming a familiar framework for both employees and beneficiaries and developing different skills for teamwork. Even since the pandemic, the rules became stricter and the entire staff was removed from their comfort zone which could lead to an imbalance in stress management and imprint on emotional state of the employees, therefore causing burnout. This research targets a single objective, specifically the relationship between burnout, cognitive-emotional coping strategies and professional stress management strategies, the hypotheses being formulated one by one considering the correlation of two variables. ABSTRACT

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To identify how family caregivers adapt to the caregiving role following a relative's COVID-19-related intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalisation. BACKGROUND: Family caregiving is often associated with poor health amongst caregivers which may limit their capacity to effectively support patients. Though severe COVID-19 infection has necessitated increasing numbers of persons who require caregiver support, little is known about these caregivers, the persons they are caring for, or the strategies used to effectively adjust to the caregiving role. DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive study design was adopted, and findings are reported using COREQ. METHODS: A secondary analysis of transcripts from semi-structured interviews conducted with recently discharged ICU patients who had COVID-19 (n = 16) and their family caregivers (n = 16) was completed using thematic analysis. MAXQDA 2020 and Miro were used to organise data and complete coding. Analysis involved a structured process of open and closed coding to identify and confirm themes that elucidated adaptation to family caregiving. RESULTS: Six themes highlight how family caregivers adapt to the caregiving role following an ICU COVID-19-related hospitalisation including (1) engaging the support of family and friends, (2) increased responsibilities to accommodate caregiving, (3) managing emotions, (4) managing infection control, (5) addressing patient independence and (6) engaging support services. These themes were found to be congruent with the Roy adaptation model. CONCLUSIONS: Family caregiving is a stressful transition following a patient's acute hospitalisation. Effective adaptation requires flexibility and sufficient support, beginning with the care team who can adequately prepare the family for the anticipated challenges of recovery. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Clinical teams may improve post-hospitalisation care outcomes of patients by preparing families to effectively adjust to the caregiver role-particularly in identifying sufficient support resources. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Participation of patients/caregivers in this study was limited to the data provided through participant interviews.
